Walk America
The Walk that Saves Babies
Over 8,000 San Antonians strolled into Brackenridge
Park this May for the 37th annual WalkAmerica. The support
and participation of corporate teams, family teams
and individuals made this year’s celebration the most successful
walk to date!
The fun-filled day
began with musical
entertainment and a
brief stage program
recognizing top sponsors
such as Citi, H-E-B
and Capital Group
Companies. After an
energizing warm-up,
the crowd hit the trail,
led by a preemie parade of children in strollers and wagons.
Upon completing the approximate 3-mile trek, walkers
celebrated with a picnic in the park, music and lively
activities in the children’s corner.
“The community support for WalkAmerica is just extraordinary,”
says John McLaughlin, senior vice president of
Capital Group Companies and the 2007 WalkAmerica
chair. “We set our goal high this year, aiming for $694,000,
and thanks to generous sponsors and dedicated walkers,
our final tally totaled more than $745,000!”
The first WalkAmerica ever was held in San Antonio
back in 1970. Today WalkAmerica is celebrated in thousands
of communities across our nation every spring and
is the biggest fund-raiser for the March of Dimes. Seventysix
cents of every dollar raised goes directly to research
and educational programs in the fight to give every baby
a healthy start.
