YOUR DONATIONS AND
RACE DOLLARS IN ACTION

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® runs one of the most innovative, responsive grant programs in breast cancer today. Up to 75 percent of net funds raised by the San Antonio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, including money raised at the 9th Annual Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure®, benefit our community. The remaining 25 percent goes toward international breast cancer research to find a cure for breast cancer.

Since inception in 1997, the Komen San Antonio Affiliate has funded more than $5 million in grants to Bexar County hospitals, clinics, agencies and community 501(c)(3) organizations providing breast health education, screening and treatment programs to the medically underserved. This year Komen San Antonio Affiliate will contribute more than $750,000 back to the community. The following have been selected for the 2006-2007 large grants program.

American Cancer Society “Road to Recovery” taxi voucher program will be made available to women diagnosed with breast cancer in need of transportation to their treatment, screening or diagnostic appointments.

Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) provides treatment for underinsured and uninsured women with breast cancer who have household incomes 300 percent or more below the federal poverty level.

CentroMed provides education, screening, diagnostic and case management services for the prevention and detection of breast cancer on the south side of San Antonio for low-income, uninsured women ages 40-49.

CommuniCare Health Centers provides clinical breast exams, screening mammograms and diagnostic breast procedures/treatment for uninsured and underinsured, low-income women on the east and west sides of San Antonio.

Martinez Street Women’s Center, the Entre Mujeres/Between Women Project (Promotoras) provides education, outreach and support services to underserved, low-income, minority women on the southeast side of San Antonio.

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District provides access to early diagnosis of breast cancer by offering free screening and diagnostic services to uninsured, low-income women in Bexar County. Komen funds will provide women with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Mobile Mammography services and needed follow-up diagnostic care.

SLEW (Support Lending for Emotional Well-Being) Wellness Center provides emotional and physical support of uninsured, underinsured and low-income women who are recovering from and/or undergoing breast cancer surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatment in Bexar County.

WINGS (Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving, Sharing) provides patient navigator service and treatment for uninsured women diagnosed with breast cancer or recurring breast cancer in Bexar County. The average WINGS client has a household income of $11,600.

YWCA of San Antonio provides the Women’s Health Services ENCOREplus program, which promotes breast health education throughout San Antonio and offers low-cost screening mammograms to medically underserved women ages 40-49.

The San Antonio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® does more than just award checks to organizations. There are stringent guidelines set forth by a local grants committee requiring quarterly monitoring and site visits for each organization.

“We take the grant review process very seriously,” explained Tyler Davies, board member and grants co-chair for Komen San Antonio Affiliate. “Stewardship of the money is incredibly important. We want to ensure that each organization is keeping its promise to reach out to the community and make an impact. These quarterly reports are required for the group to receive the funds, and our committee makes sure that the dollars are making the difference.”

While larger grants are awarded once a year, Komen San Antonio Affiliate also has a process for smaller grants that are disbursed throughout the year.

“After serving this community for 10 years, Komen understands there is a need for funding for specific breast health projects that benefit the medically underserved in the county,” said Faye Bracey, Komen San Antonio Affiliate board member and grants co-chair. “We take applications for funds under $15,000 throughout the year and base awards on the proposed project and level of need.”
