Letter From the Editor

The two months when we observe Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are a good time to celebrate the importance of families. And as you read this issue of SAN ANTONIO WOMAN, you’ll see that some take family closeness to an additional level in multigenerational businesses.

Our Profile, Marjie Christopher, now works with her son, who is president of Rio Cibolo Ranch, an entertainment venue for weddings and other celebrations. Mom is VP of operations and the catering director, and Dad — a practicing attorney — lends occasional support with bookkeeping and finances.

Our Feature focuses on three father/daughter duos that find fulfillment in working together in the family enterprise. In fields as disparate as jewelry design, automobile sales and the funeral business, these three women think it’s great to be on the job with Dad.

In Environments, visit a home in Rockwall Ranch in New Braunfels that merges ranch comfort with big city sophistication. And Priscilla, our resident expert on matters of style and décor, answers your questions about color, including which hues are hot for spring and summer.

Fashion presents the wild side of spring, with exotic touches, a safari influence and snakeskin prints in unexpected places.

Women in Business features several women who are the dynamos behind successful parties and other grand occasions. These event planners can provide a setting for your event and coordinate décor, menu, flowers music and more around a central theme. They make it look easy!

ArtBeat introduces artist Marilyn Lanfear, who transforms such unlikely media as buttons and lead into nostalgic works of art with overtones of family history.

Dining takes you to a new restaurant, Brasserie Pavil, that is winning raves for its updated takes on classic French dishes and excellent bread. Focus on Food reminds us how delicious greens can be in our diet and presents three examples, with recipes, from local restaurants.

Our Role Model is a young woman with a global outlook. On the faculty at the University of the Incarnate Word, she puts her research in nutrition to practical use, working with people in developing nations to find sustainable food sources.

You’ll also find articles on writing effective résumés, selecting clothes for your body type, dealing with gluten intolerance and celiac disease, summer’s Big Read (Fahrenheit 451), the best ways to get feedback from your clients and customers and the importance of rites of passage to the family. Arts and Culture informs you about the opening of the San Antonio River’s Museum Reach extension and the always popular Texas Folklife Festival.

One special section focuses on aspects of aging and the choices it presents, and another details the vital efforts of the American Diabetes Association in combating the disease so common in San Antonio.

Remember, too, that you can get information on these and other topics at our redesigned Web site, www.sawoman.com.
