Letter from the Editor - Jan/Feb 2011

As we begin a new year, it’s a good time to reflect on those things that bring us genuine happiness. A recurring element in this issue of SAN ANTONIO WOMAN is finding the job you love.

Our Profile, Suzanne Wade, says she has spent her whole life in retail, from the time her father “allowed” her to work in his gas business as she was growing up, until today. As president of H-E-B’s San Antonio Food and Drug Division, she oversees operations in more than 200 stores from north of Austin to deep South Texas.  She also finds time to lend her talents to the community through United Way, American Heart, Girl Scouts and other organizations.

Our feature visits three women who made drastic career changes and are finding satisfaction in their new livelihoods: Linda Elliott of Elliott Connection, Susan Barker of Barker Graphic Design and Melissa Henk, who left a job in business to work toward certification as an interior designer.

Our Role Model, Valerie Frausto, found she could follow her childhood dream to become a firefighter and is now a lieutenant in the San Antonio Fire Department, in line for promotion to captain.

And our Women in Business – three “Mothers of Invention” – have developed and marketed products that are now widely distributed. In each case, the mother was inspired by the needs of her child.  Read about Claudia Berdegué of HomeSwimmer, Deb Bolner Prost of Cool Off™ and Kimberly Webb of Rockin’ Green Soap.

With the Stock Show & Rodeo just around the corner, you’ll want to check our Fashion section for Western-inspired clothing and accessories.  If losing weight is on your agenda, see Beauty & Fitness for international takes on dieting, including two that really seem to work, and the importance of detoxing.

Our featured home, in the charming Oakwell Farms community, proved to be the perfect downsized residence for a couple that love to travel.

Dining takes you to the popular La Gloria, home of Mexican street food.

Among its New Year’s resolutions, Shopping directs you to the best post-Christmas bargains and drops a few hints for Valentine’s Day.  Dollars & Sense tells how to deal with credit card debt and starting to prepare for tax season.  ArtBeat introduces lyric soprano Emily Ward, resident artist with the San Antonio Opera and a member of the Stiletto vocal group.

Read also about robotic surgery, how to cope with bullying, San Antonio’s arts and culture scene and the fall’s gala evenings.

Three special sections focus on the American Heart Association and its Go Red for Women campaign, innovations in Girl Scouts and a guide to summer camps.  And remember to visit our website, www.sawoman.com, for more information on these and other topics.
