letter from the editor
by Beverly Purcell-Guerra

In his poem The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost wrote, “I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” In this issue of SAN ANTONIO WOMAN, we introduce you to three women who have taken “the road less traveled” in their career choices.

One, a business major, is a professional racecar driver. Another trained as a dental hygienist and now makes artificial eye prostheses. The third built on her chemistry degree for a career as an art conservator. They all love what they do — perhaps the road less traveled has indeed made all the difference.

In addition to holding many positions in Girl Scouts of the San Antonio Area and Alamo Heights Independent School District, Goudge has also worked with the Alamo Heights School Foundation, serving as a board member as president. All of her children do some kind of volunteering, and the family as a whole seems to appreciate the effect on their lives.

Up Front: Following Their Hearts — Meet three women who excel in nontraditional careers.
Gender boundaries for jobs have slowly dissolved for women. SAN ANTONIO WOMAN profiles three women who have crossed those boundaries and forged unusual careers that began when each followed their heart. Anne Zanikos is an art conservationist who apprenticed at museums and private conservators before opening her own practice. Her most challenging project was restoration of vandalized statues at San Fernando Cathedral. Race car driver Tina Stull, among only 4 percent of race car drivers who are women, enters some 15 races per year, including the Indy 500. Jean Thompson is an ocularist, a medical specialist who creates artificial eye prostheses.
