What does it take to be successful in business? A good idea, determination and follow-through, for starters. In this issue of SAN ANTONIO WOMAN we introduce you to women who have built thriving enterprises.

Our Profile subject, Cathy Amato, started as a management trainee at Jack in the Box, advanced into management and eventually joined two friends in owning 46 Subway locations in San Antonio and Austin. Now she’s moving into new territory — the more upscale Ruby Tuesday franchise. One restaurant is already open, and a second is under construction.

Our feature introduces three experienced businesswomen who disclose how they’ve dealt with economic challenges. Read what Kathleen Kuper of Kuper Sotheby Realty, Valerie Gonzalez of Delicious Tamales and Shawn McCormick of Summit Home Medical Equipment have to say.

Women in Business focuses on entrepreneurs who are making names for themselves with the delicious products they create and sell. They are Margaret Anaglia of Al’s Gourmet Nuts, Heather Hunter of Cowgirl Granola, Sally Drew of Sally’s Sassy Salsa and Sandra Steen of Oats to Joy cookie mix.

As summer’s hot weather starts to recede, it’s time to think of fall fashions. We’ll be shopping for cozy knits, high-impact jewelry and garments of rich color and texture and perhaps a subtle Russian influence.

Take a tour of a home in the Vineyard, and consult Priscilla of Ask Priscilla for answers to your decorating questions. Beauty and Fitness is full of tips for pampering your skin, and Health Matters has advice on healthy aging.

Focus on Food reminds us of the pleasures of brunch. Dining visits Tre Trattoria and finds the Tuscan specialties first-rate. If you or someone you know is in the job market, be sure to read Dollars and Sense for pointers on preparing for a job interview.

Our Role Model, a student from McAllen who is pursuing a doctorate in chemistry at UTSA, hopes to attract more South Texas youth to careers in scientific research.

ArtBeat previews a special exhibition by healers/artists and stresses the importance of art as self-care. Book Shelf’s suggestions for fall reading include a new book by Susan Toomey Frost that recounts the history of the art tiles and pottery produced by the San José Workshops.

Mommy Matters covers the importance of keeping promises, Scene Around Town revisits three stellar events, and Arts and Culture presents an overview of the coming season of music, plays and exhibitions.

Our two special sections give you a glimpse of the Olé Holiday Marketplace sponsored by the Junior League of San Antonio and the important work for healthier babies done by the March of Dimes.
