letter from the editor
by Beverly Purcell-Guerra

Golf has traditionally been thought of as a man’s game, but more and more women are taking it up. Some of them enjoy the exercise and camaraderie, while others are attracted by the business opportunities the sport presents.
In this issue of SAN ANTONIO WOMAN, you’ll meet some of the trailblazing
women who claim golf as their game and are introducing it to the wider community.

You’ll also meet Linda Hardberger, San Antonio’s first lady, who stepped into the role somewhat reluctantly, but who has found that it affords her a platform for the causes she supports — art, urban spaces and community gardens. Still, she is anticipating retirement living aboard a 42-foot boat when the mayor’s term ends next year.

In Environments, you’ll visit a home in Cordillera Ranch that takes many of its cues from Santa Fe architecture. Fashion’s spring forecast showcases color against the dramatic background of the Spanish Governor’s Palace. Our Role Model is a young artist/singer twice blessed with talent. In ArtBeat, read about one of the city’s newer musical groups, Voci di Sorelle, which blends 12 women’s voices in a cappella harmonies.

Women in Business introduces five women who are finding career success and personal fulfillment in the antiques business. And our Travel feature takes us to Round Top, one of the premier destinations for serious antiquarians as well as a mecca for music-lovers.

Focus on Food presents prevailing views in the “Is fish safe to eat?” controversy and comes down on the side of “yes.” Following are mouth-watering seafood recipes from some of the city’s best chefs.

As we all think more seriously of our planet and “green” living, Health Matters lists 10 steps to more Earth-friendly habits, and Ask Priscilla discusses the compact fluorescent light bulbs that are earning environmental kudos for their energy-saving ways.

You’ll also find articles on aromatherapy, how to cope with bullying if your child is a victim, managing e-mail and money-saving strategies. There’s a review of Musicophilia in Book Shelf, a report on Café Paladar in Dining and an account of Respite Care, Texas’ only licensed overnight shelter for children with special needs.

Please take time to read the special sections on Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its annual “race for the cure” and Total Body Image, with updates on cosmetic procedures for face and body.

Profile: (On The Cover) FUTURE TENSE: Linda Hardberger on art, water and not being a traditional mayor's wife
Linda Hardberger has her sights set on a watery horizon.
“In a year and a half, we’ll be back on that boat,” she says with firm determination. She is referring to the 42-foot craft on which she and her husband, Phil Hardberger, spent more than a year sailing the waters off the East Coast, the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes, back in 2003...

Up Front: WOMEN PLAY GOLF, TOO -They enjoy the exercise, the competitiveness and the fellowship
Though Mary, Queen of Scots, played the game in the 1500s, golf eventually
became known as a gentleman’s sport, especially in the United States. But women have never been entirely excluded, and today they are the fastest-growing segment of the industry’s market. Whether they aspire to win trophies or just play for fun and recreation, the ladies are making their mark on the...

Travel: SHOP TILL YOU DROP IN ROUND TOP -
Or just come celebrate the simple joys of a Sunday afternoon
If the state map had a star on it marking the “Antique Capital of Texas,” it would likely rest on a tiny black dot in Fayette County on a pretty little place called Round Top, population 77.
But ask any woman within a 200-mile radius of this little east-central-Texas
whistle-stop, and she’ll tell you that she’s either been there herself or knows...

Giving Back : RESPITE CARE OF SAN ANTONIO - It’s a home away from home for children with special needs
Bert Pfiester recalls one of the defining moments in his transformation into a caregiver for children with special needs.
